American Brokers Ukrainian Talks in the UAE as White House Seeks for Conflict Resolution
Diplomatic negotiations with US, Russian, and Ukrainian delegates commenced in Abu Dhabi this week, marking the latest stage in efforts to forge a ceasefire deal to conclude the protracted hostilities in the region.
Key Participants and Initial Talks
American military Secretary the US representative allegedly met with a Moscow team on Monday night, with negotiations extending into Tuesday.
“Negotiations are advancing smoothly with continued optimism. The Secretary remains in close coordination with the administration throughout these proceedings,” his spokesperson commented.
The Ukrainian top intelligence official, the head of military intelligence, was also expected to take part in the meetings, though it remained unclear whether direct talks with Moscow’s representatives would occur or if separate one-on-one meetings would be held.
Identity of the Russian delegation was not immediately clear. “I have nothing to say. Our position is to monitor press coverage,” a Kremlin representative told official outlets.
Background and Revised Peace Plan
The current talks come after recent discussions in a European nation where American and Kyiv representatives revised a preliminary American plan for ending the war.
Moscow has not yet accepted the most recent draft of the proposal and is unlikely to agree to many of the Kyiv amendments.
Russia’s foreign minister, the Russian diplomat, stated that any revised peace plan must embody the “spirit and letter” of what was agreed during earlier summit meetings between both nations.
Global Reactions and Apprehensions
European officials are apparently struggling to remain involved in the negotiations as US representatives assume control.
The Finnish president, a European figure, who has emerged as a key contact between Washington and EU officials, stated that the coming days would be decisive in attempts to reach a peace settlement.
He allegedly held discussions with Kyiv’s leader and Nato officials, stating that “Ukraine’s destiny must be determined by Ukrainians, and with European security falling under Europe’s purview.”
At the same time, the France’s leader, Emmanuel Macron, cautioned against a peace deal that would amount to a “capitulation” for Ukraine.
“The current proposal indicates what Moscow might find acceptable. But does this imply it should be endorsed by Ukraine and Europe? Certainly not,” he affirmed.
Details of the Initial American Plan
American plan was originally made up of multiple articles and was drawn from dialog between American and Moscow officials, with contributions from Ukrainian security authorities.
Key elements of the proposal reportedly included:
- The nation relinquishing territory currently occupied by Moscow
- Additional zones that might be expected to be voluntarily surrendered
- Restrictions on the size of the Ukrainian army
- Immunity for all parties in the conflict regarding war crimes
Recent Events and Continuing Difficulties
The US official allegedly went to the Ukrainian capital to brief Zelenskyy on the proposal and urge quick acceptance.
This pressure, combined with the disclosure of the plan, apparently took by surprise Ukrainian and European officials.
The Ukrainian president reportedly that the nation was facing one of the toughest moments in its existence and was being compelled to choose between “losing our dignity or losing a key ally.”
Subsequently, the US official informed Nato ambassadors on the plan in the capital, with one participant labeling it as “an extremely difficult session” and noting that EU officials were stunned by both the content and manner of the presentation.
The US administration later moderated its position, indicating that the comprehensive plan was an “opening point for discussion” rather than a definitive demand.
Military Situation During Negotiations
While peace talks proceed, Moscow has maintained its nightly assaults on Ukraine’s urban centers.
Moscow’s forces allegedly launched numerous of missiles and many of unmanned aircraft at objectives in and around Kyiv, according to Ukrainian sources.
The Ukrainian president emphasized that Moscow must not believe it could win the conflict while negotiations were ongoing.
“The priority is coordinated diplomatic movement among all partners, through shared endeavors. Pressure on Russia must deliver results,” he affirmed.
Kyiv’s mayor reported that seven people had been fatally injured in the overnight assault on the city.
