Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Celebrated For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at the Age of 89.

The Academy Award-nominated actor Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran passed away at the age of 89.

This actress, whose filmography spanned Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, passed away at home at her Ojai, California home. The news was announced through a message from her child, award-winning actress Laura Dern.

Dern, who starred with Diane Ladd in various films such as Rambling Rose, described her as “my incredible hero and my special gift of a mother”, writing that she was at her bedside during her final moments.

“She was an exceptional grandmother, mother, daughter, actress, artist as well as compassionate soul that only dreams could have seemingly created,” she expressed. “We were lucky to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Early Career and Breakthrough

The start of her career saw supporting roles in TV shows including Gunsmoke and that decade had her appearing with actor Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.

In the same year, 1974, she appeared alongside Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. The performance earned Ladd her initial Oscar nod in the supporting actress category.

Subsequent Years

In the 1980s, she appeared in crime thriller the movie Black Widow plus comedy sequel Christmas Vacation and appeared on the sitcom Alice, a television series based on her earlier movie.

In the following decade, she was given another Oscar nomination for supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her part in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart where she acted as the parent of her biological child Dern’s character. The next year she received another nomination for her performance in Rambling Rose which also starred Dern.

“This was the film that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she flew me and Laura to London for a special screening and an event in our honor,” Ladd recalled about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, grasping our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”

The 1990s included parts in comedy The Cemetery Club joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she acted as the mother of Dern another time. Those years also saw her score TV award nominations for work in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire and Touched by an Angel, a drama.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She persisted in performing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, a movie, the David Lynch project the movie Inland Empire and White’s comedy-drama series the program Enlightened. She additionally starred next to Sandra Bullock, a star in the film 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Subsequent TV appearances featured Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.

Filmmaking Ventures

She also authored and oversaw the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck which starred Diane Ladd and previous spouse actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she mentioned. “I’m privileged to have directed him on a project. In fact, I stand as the only woman ever who directed her former husband. I often joke: ‘I advise females, if you want revenge, helm a movie with your ex.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Personal Life

She happened to be the third cousin of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a great influence in my life”.

During 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with a respiratory illness and told her life expectancy was six months but she regained full health after her daughter shifted her to a different hospital.

“When you use your pain and avoid letting it accumulate similar to a wound, rather utilize it to investigate, to make the path clearer for you and those around, then you are triumphing,” Ladd remarked.
